Wichita, Kan. – Central and south-central Kansas face rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms through Thursday, with flooding concerns rising as storms linger overnight. The National Weather Service warns of numerous storms late Tuesday and again Wednesday night, bringing the potential for flash flooding in low-lying areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, scattered storms will move in from the west late Tuesday and intensify Wednesday into Thursday morning. Multiple waves of rainfall could drop significant totals in cities including Wichita, Hutchinson, and Emporia. Heavy downpours may flood creeks, streams, and roadways, especially where drainage is poor.

Drivers should prepare for slowed commutes on major routes like I-35 and U.S. 54, with localized ponding expected. Emergency managers recommend avoiding low-water crossings and keeping cell phones charged in case of power outages. Cooler-than-normal temperatures in the 60s and 70s will accompany the storms.

Storm chances decrease by Thursday night, but isolated activity may persist into Friday. Additional alerts are possible if rainfall rates increase or flooding becomes widespread.
