Wichita, Kan. – After a hot Saturday with highs climbing into the low 90s, Kansas residents should brace for a shift in conditions as storms return Sunday. The National Weather Service in Wichita warns of scattered thunderstorms moving in from the west by late Sunday morning and lasting through Sunday night.
According to the NWS, the strongest storm chances sit in central and western Kansas, including Russell (53%), Pratt (47%), and Harper (35%). Wichita has about a 27% chance of seeing storms, while Topeka and Emporia may only experience spotty activity. Hazards include small hail, gusty winds, and locally heavy rainfall that could create slick roads and slowdowns for late weekend travel.
Drivers across I-70 and U.S. 54 should prepare for sudden downpours and shifting winds Sunday afternoon and evening. Outdoor plans, including tailgates or late-summer festivals, may need backup indoor options. Officials urge residents to stay weather-aware, secure loose items, and avoid flooded low-lying roads if heavy rain develops.
The unsettled pattern may bring additional rain chances into the start of next week, though widespread severe weather is not expected at this time.
