Wichita, Kan. – Record heat and strong southerly winds are expected across south-central Kansas today, increasing the risk of fire spread.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, afternoon highs will climb into the mid-90s to near 100 degrees, including around 95 degrees in Wichita and as high as 100 degrees near Pratt. Wind gusts between 30 and 40 mph are expected, with some areas seeing gusts exceeding 40 mph.
The combination of hot temperatures, dry conditions, and gusty winds is creating elevated fire danger across the region. Officials advise avoiding outdoor burning and activities that could spark fires.
A cold front is expected to move through later today, shifting conditions overnight. Temperatures will drop into the 40s, and scattered rain chances will develop, especially across southern and eastern Kansas.
Rain chances range from around 40% to over 60% in cities such as Wichita, Winfield, and Coffeyville, with the highest chances focused farther southeast.
The rapid shift from hot, windy conditions to cooler temperatures and rain may impact travel and outdoor plans later today into tonight.
This pattern may be especially noticeable for outdoor workers and commuters dealing with strong winds followed by changing conditions overnight.
