WICHITA, Kan. – Strong southerly winds are sweeping across Central Kansas today, with gusts expected to reach up to 50 mph in open areas. The National Weather Service in Wichita warns that the strongest winds will occur through Saturday morning, potentially causing travel difficulties for high-profile vehicles and minor property damage from unsecured outdoor items.
According to the National Weather Service, these gusty conditions will ease slightly by evening, but another active weather pattern is expected to develop Sunday night into early next week. Showers and thunderstorms could return by Monday afternoon, bringing the potential for heavy rain and damaging winds. Some storms may linger into Tuesday as temperatures drop back into the lower 70s.
Residents across Sedgwick, Reno, Butler, and Cowley counties should secure loose outdoor furniture, check power sources, and use caution when driving on east–west roadways. Spotter activation is not anticipated tonight but may be needed if Monday’s storms intensify.
Winds are expected to diminish by midweek with drier and milder weather returning by Thursday.
