WICHITA, Kan. – A brief taste of fall is on the way for south-central Kansas as showers and a cooldown move in Sunday night through Tuesday before temperatures rebound into the 80s midweek.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop Sunday evening, spreading east overnight. Some storms may bring brief heavy rain, lightning, and gusty winds, especially along and south of I-35. Monday and Tuesday will feel notably cooler, with highs in the 60s and lower 70s after a warm, breezy weekend.
Forecasters say the warmest readings Monday will be confined to far southeast Kansas, while areas north and west of Wichita could stay in the low 60s. Showers should taper off by Tuesday evening as dry air builds back in. By Wednesday and Thursday, sunshine and southwest breezes will return, sending highs back into the upper 70s to mid-80s—about 10 degrees above average for mid-October.
Drivers should watch for slick spots during the Monday morning commute, especially on I-135 and local highways. Outdoor plans midweek should fare well, but lawns and fall crops will dry quickly again under the warmer pattern. Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items ahead of Sunday night’s gusty storms and stay weather-aware through early Tuesday.
