WICHITA, Kan. – A stretch of unseasonably warm fall weather will peak this weekend across central and southern Kansas before a cooler, wetter change arrives by Columbus Day. Highs in the upper 80s through Sunday will give way to 60s and 70s as rain and isolated storms move in late Sunday night into Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, a few early-morning showers and storms affected parts of southeast Kansas Friday, but dry and mostly sunny conditions will dominate through the weekend. Saturday looks warm and quiet, with highs between 82 and 88 degrees across much of the region, including Wichita, Hutchinson, and El Dorado.
A breezy south wind Sunday will push temperatures close to 90 degrees in some locations, with humidity building ahead of the next front. The NWS says rain chances increase late Sunday night into Monday morning, especially along and east of I-35. Cooler air will arrive behind the front, dropping daytime highs by more than 15 degrees compared with Sunday.
Travelers on I-135 and I-70 should watch for slick spots early Monday, though widespread severe weather is not expected. Residents are advised to secure outdoor decorations and check drainage ahead of the rain. Cooler, seasonable air should linger into midweek, offering a more typical October feel after several summerlike days.
