Wichita, Kansas – Light rain across south-central Kansas is expected to transition to snow Friday afternoon and continue into the night, bringing the potential for slick travel conditions across the Wichita area.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, rain will gradually change to light snow from noon through midnight as colder air moves into the region. Snow accumulations from a trace up to 1 inch are possible across portions of central and south-central Kansas, including Wichita.

Forecasters said snowfall amounts are expected to remain light, but slick spots may develop, especially on bridges and overpasses where road surfaces cool more quickly. Drivers traveling this evening and overnight should use caution and allow extra time.

Higher snowfall totals are expected farther southwest across Kansas, where accumulations may exceed amounts seen in the Wichita area. However, no winter storm warnings or advisories were highlighted for south-central Kansas with this update.

Temperatures are expected to remain cold enough overnight to support snow accumulation on untreated surfaces. While widespread hazardous conditions are not anticipated, brief periods of reduced visibility may occur during snow showers.

The National Weather Service emphasized that impacts will be localized, with most issues tied to elevated roadways and less-traveled routes. Main roads may remain mostly wet, though conditions can change quickly as snow develops.

Residents are encouraged to monitor forecast updates, particularly if traveling after sunset. Motorists should reduce speed, increase following distance, and be alert for changing road conditions.

Commuters, students, and evening workers traveling Friday night may experience the greatest impacts during the transition from rain to snow. Conditions are expected to improve later overnight as precipitation tapers off.
