Wichita, Kan. – Strong storms are expected to develop across south-central Kansas this afternoon, with threats of large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rain lasting through 10 p.m. Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, the highest risk sits across Pratt, Hutchinson, Harper, Winfield, and Wichita, where storms may bring wind gusts up to 50 mph and hail up to the size of quarters. Brief but intense rainfall is also possible, creating ponding on roads and reduced visibility during the evening commute.
Emergency officials urge drivers to use caution if storms develop during peak travel times, especially along U.S. 54, I-35, and surrounding county highways. Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, monitor weather alerts, and prepare for possible power outages caused by downed tree limbs.
While the storm threat is categorized as low, even isolated severe storms can produce dangerous conditions. Storm chances taper off late this evening, but additional unsettled weather may return later this week.
