Wichita, KS – After a warm and sunny day, Kansas residents could be treated to a rare sky spectacle tonight as the Northern Lights may again be visible under mostly clear skies. The ongoing solar storm that has electrified skies across the U.S. this week remains active, offering another chance for aurora viewing across the Central Plains.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, conditions will stay clear and mild this evening with lows in the low to mid-40s, perfect for outdoor stargazing. Highs reached the upper 60s to low 70s today, and the mild trend continues into the weekend with temperatures climbing toward 80°F by Saturday — nearly 15 degrees above average.
The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center reports continued G3 to G4-level geomagnetic activity, strong enough to extend auroral visibility into Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. The best viewing window will be after 8 p.m. through midnight, facing north and away from city lights for the best chance to spot the faint red and green glows of the Aurora Borealis.
Forecasters say Kansas’ calm and dry pattern should hold through Friday, with only a slight cooldown Sunday as a weak front moves through.
If skies stay clear, tonight could offer another spectacular and rare opportunity for Kansans to experience the Northern Lights from home.
