Wichita, KS – Drivers across south-central Kansas could encounter slick patches as light snow and sleet move into the Wichita metro by midmorning Sunday, potentially impacting travel along I-135 and K-96.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, a weak system will bring a light wintry mix Sunday into Sunday evening. Significant snow or ice accumulation is not expected, but brief periods of light snow and sleet could create isolated slick spots, especially on untreated roads and elevated surfaces.
The greatest concern centers on bridges and overpasses along I-235, US-54 and I-135, where pavement temperatures may hover near freezing during the day. While widespread impacts are unlikely, even minor ice buildup can cause sudden traction issues. Areas north and east of Wichita toward El Dorado and Newton may see slightly better chances for light precipitation during the afternoon hours.
Road crews are not anticipating major treatment operations, but conditions could change quickly if bursts of sleet briefly intensify. Visibility reductions should remain minimal, though drivers may notice wet pavement turning patchy in colder pockets by late afternoon.
Motorists with Sunday travel plans should slow down on ramps, increase following distance and avoid abrupt braking. Keep headlights on during any falling precipitation and monitor local updates before heading out.
Precipitation is expected to taper by Sunday evening, with road conditions improving overnight as the system exits. Additional updates may be issued if precipitation coverage expands beyond current expectations.
