Wichita, Kansas – Patchy fog and drizzle could cut visibility below one mile along Interstate 135 and U.S. 54 before 9 a.m. Tuesday, creating slick pavement and slower travel across south-central Kansas.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, cool and damp conditions will linger through Tuesday with areas of drizzle, fog and isolated showers. Additional showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop Tuesday night, with the best chances spreading across southeast Kansas. Temperatures will climb from the 50s Tuesday into the 70s by Thursday and Friday, fueling more widespread storm chances late week.
Roadways including I-35, K-96 and I-235 may see ponding during heavier showers, especially during the evening commute Tuesday and again later this week. Cities such as Hutchinson, Winfield, Salina and Emporia could experience repeated rounds of rain, with brief downpours reducing visibility and increasing the risk for minor street flooding. Gusty winds up to 40 mph are possible in stronger thunderstorms.
Drivers should use low-beam headlights in fog, increase following distance and avoid sudden braking on damp roads. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items ahead of late-week storms and monitor local alerts as instability increases.
Showers and storms will remain possible through Friday night before cooler air returns by Saturday. Additional advisories could be issued if stronger thunderstorms organize across south-central and southeast Kansas later this week.
