Wichita, Kansas – Gusty winds and highs near 80 degrees are elevating fire danger across central and south-central Kansas through Thursday.

According to the US National Weather Service in Wichita, mild and above-average temperatures in the 60s and 70s will persist through midweek, accompanied by strong winds and periods of elevated to near-critical fire weather conditions.

Tuesday is expected to bring the highest fire risk. Afternoon temperatures are forecast between 72 and 80 degrees, with sustained winds increasing and creating Red Flag conditions in parts of the region. Dry grasses combined with low humidity and gusty winds could allow fires to spread rapidly.

Highs Wednesday will range from 71 to 78 degrees with continued breezy conditions and ongoing fire danger. By Thursday, temperatures are expected between 68 and 72 degrees, with breezy weather continuing but slightly lower fire risk compared to Tuesday.

Communities including Wichita, Hutchinson, Salina, Emporia, and surrounding areas may see rapid changes in fire behavior if ignitions occur. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged.

Drivers along Interstate 135, Interstate 70, US-54, K-96, and US-50 could encounter reduced visibility in areas where blowing dust or grassfires develop. High-profile vehicles may also experience crosswinds on open roadways.

The combination of warm temperatures and gusty winds may impact outdoor workers, ranch operations, and commuters traveling during afternoon peak wind periods.

Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items and avoid activities that could spark a fire as conditions remain dry and breezy through Thursday.
