Wichita, Kansas – Dangerous cold conditions are impacting much of central and south-central Kansas early Saturday, with wind chills well below zero creating hazardous exposure risks, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service in Wichita reports wind chill values ranging from -10°F to -15°F across the region as of early Saturday morning. Some of the coldest readings were observed near Salina, Russell, Manhattan, Emporia, and Wichita, where brisk northwest winds combined with single-digit temperatures.

Forecasters warn that frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes under these conditions. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, wear layered clothing, and ensure pets are protected from the cold. Those who must be outside should cover exposed skin and take frequent breaks indoors.

Travel impacts are primarily related to exposure rather than road conditions, though drivers should be cautious if stopping along roadways. Cold-related vehicle issues such as reduced battery performance are also possible. Extra care is advised along major corridors including Interstate 35, Interstate 135, Interstate 70, and US-50, especially for early-morning travelers.

Despite the bitter start to the day, the National Weather Service notes that a warming trend will begin Sunday. High temperatures Saturday are expected to reach only the upper teens to mid-20s, but Sunday highs will climb into the upper 30s and 40s, with continued warming into early next week. A few flurries may occur today, though no significant snowfall is expected.

Officials emphasize that the cold remains the primary hazard Saturday morning. Checking on vulnerable neighbors and ensuring adequate heating remains critical during this period of extreme cold.

These conditions may especially affect early-shift workers, commuters, and anyone attending outdoor activities Saturday morning across central Kansas.
