Wichita, Kansas — Dry and unseasonably mild weather is expected to continue across south-central Kansas on Friday, with afternoon highs climbing into the lower to upper 50s.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, Friday will remain dry and breezy as a prolonged stretch of mild December weather settles across central, south-central, and southeast Kansas. Normal high temperatures for this time of year are typically in the 40s, making Friday’s forecast notably warmer than average.

Winds on Friday may become gusty at times, particularly during the afternoon, though no precipitation is expected. Overnight lows are forecast to drop into the mid-30s to lower 40s, continuing the pattern of mild nighttime temperatures.

The warming trend is expected to strengthen over the weekend and into early next week. Forecast highs are projected to reach the mid-50s Saturday, followed by upper 50s to lower 60s by Monday. By Tuesday, temperatures could rise into the low to mid-60s, with some areas potentially approaching 70 degrees.

The National Weather Service noted that record or near-record warmth is possible by midweek, especially Tuesday, as dry conditions persist. Rain chances are expected to remain minimal through at least the middle of next week.

While the mild weather may be welcomed by many, officials remind residents that dry conditions can increase fire danger, particularly on windy days. Outdoor burning should be conducted cautiously and in accordance with local regulations.

Commuters, outdoor workers, and students may notice the biggest impacts Friday afternoon as breezy conditions combine with unusually warm temperatures for late December.
