Wichita, Kansas – Very strong northwest winds are expected to create dangerous grassland fire conditions across south-central Kansas on Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, winds will increase late Thursday morning and continue through the afternoon, with gusts commonly reaching 50 to 60 mph. These strong winds, combined with dry conditions, are expected to push grassland fire danger into the extreme category for much of the region.

Forecast maps indicate the strongest gusts will be possible near and north of the Wichita area, including parts of central Kansas, where wind speeds may exceed 55 mph at times. Farther south, gusts in the 40 to 50 mph range are still expected and could contribute to rapid fire spread.

The National Weather Service warns that any fires that ignite Thursday could quickly become uncontrollable due to the combination of wind and dry fuels. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents are urged to avoid activities that could spark a fire, including welding, dragging chains, or parking vehicles on dry grass.

In addition to fire danger, the high winds may make travel difficult for high-profile vehicles, particularly on east–west roadways.

The hazardous conditions may be especially impactful for rural residents, agricultural workers, and commuters traveling during the afternoon hours.
