Wichita, Kan. – A major cool down is on the way for Kansas as thunderstorms return this weekend, dropping temperatures 10 to 20 degrees below seasonal averages by Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, a weak disturbance Saturday will bring scattered showers and storms across central and southern Kansas, with the storm threat increasing Sunday into Monday. Rain chances rise to 50 percent by Sunday afternoon and continue through the start of the week.

Highs Saturday will remain near 81 to 89 degrees, but the bigger change arrives Sunday and Monday when temperatures fall into the upper 70s and even the upper 60s in some areas. Wichita, Hutchinson, and Winfield could all see highs dip nearly 15 degrees below normal by Monday. To the east, Emporia, Chanute, and Coffeyville may struggle to escape the lower 70s as rain lingers.

The storm chances and cooler air will persist through much of next week, with additional rain possible midweek.
