Wichita, Kan. – Showers and thunderstorms will sweep across much of Kansas today, raising the risk of localized flooding before tapering off to the east late tonight. Areas from Wichita to Hutchinson and Salina are seeing rain chances above 60 percent, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters said numerous storms could produce heavy rainfall through this evening, with the greatest flooding risk in low-lying areas and along creeks and streams. By Friday, skies clear with highs near the mid-80s before another round of storms develops Friday night into Saturday.

Drivers should expect slick roads on I-135 and U.S. 54 this evening, with poor visibility during heavier downpours. Emergency officials urged residents to avoid flooded roadways and to keep phones charged in case of power outages. Outdoor plans Friday will be safe, but Saturday carries a 40 percent chance of renewed thunderstorms, particularly in south-central and eastern Kansas.

Storm chances remain into Saturday night, with additional advisories possible if rainfall becomes heavy again.
