Wichita, Kan. – Thunderstorms could bring a noisy evening commute to parts of Kansas on Wednesday as a strong cold front sweeps across the state. Afternoon highs are expected to top out near 90 degrees in Wichita before storms roll through, followed by a noticeable drop in temperatures heading into the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, storms are most likely late Wednesday into the evening, with another round possible Thursday night into Friday. The front will drop daytime highs into the 70s by Friday and Saturday, a sharp contrast from the near 90-degree readings expected midweek.
Communities along I-35 and U.S. 54, including Hutchinson, El Dorado, and Wellington, may see brief heavy rain and lightning during both storm windows. Drivers are urged to use caution during downpours and be prepared for quickly changing road conditions. Power outages are possible with stronger cells.
Behind the cold front, milder conditions will settle in for the weekend, giving Kansans a break from the summer heat. Additional advisories could be issued if storms strengthen.
