Wichita, Kan. – Kansas residents are bracing for a shift in weather this week as dangerous heat gives way to scattered thunderstorms by Tuesday and Wednesday. Heat indices near 100 degrees are expected Sunday and Monday before storms move into the state.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, widespread showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop Tuesday afternoon across central, south-central, and southeast Kansas, lasting into Wednesday. Some storms could bring heavy rain, lightning, and gusty winds, creating hazards for drivers and outdoor activities.
Wichita, Hutchinson, and El Dorado may see the most impact from Tuesday evening storms, while areas east toward Parsons and Independence could face stronger downpours. Highs will hold in the upper 90s early in the week before dropping into the upper 80s and low 90s by Wednesday.
Officials advise limiting outdoor activity during peak afternoon heat through Monday and preparing for possible power outages once storms arrive. Travelers are urged to watch for slick highways and reduced visibility during downpours, especially on I-35 and U.S. 54.
Near-normal temperatures are expected to settle in from Wednesday through the end of the week, though additional storm chances remain possible.
