Wichita, Kan. – Strong storms will sweep across Kansas tonight, bringing the threat of large hail as they move southeast into Saturday morning. The National Weather Service in Wichita warns residents to prepare for impacts beginning after dark and lasting into the early hours.
According to the National Weather Service, storms are expected to first reach central Kansas between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m., affecting cities like Hutchinson and Salina before shifting east. Wichita and surrounding communities, including Emporia and Eureka, could see the most intense activity between midnight and 4 a.m., while southeastern towns such as Chanute and Coffeyville may not experience storms until after 3 a.m.
Officials caution that hail will be the primary hazard, with damaging winds possible in stronger cells. Drivers should avoid overnight travel if possible, as sudden hail bursts could create dangerous conditions on I-35 and surrounding highways. Residents are urged to secure vehicles, protect outdoor property, and keep phones charged in case of power outages.
The storm system is expected to clear Kansas by Saturday morning, though additional advisories may follow if conditions change.
