Wichita, Kan. – Much of Kansas is waking up to unseasonably cool weather Friday after a strong cold front swept through the region, keeping high temperatures 20 to 25 degrees below normal. Afternoon highs across south-central Kansas, including Wichita, Hutchinson, and Winfield, are holding in the lower 60s—closer to mid-October averages than early September.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, scattered showers will taper off this evening, leaving behind brisk and chilly conditions overnight. Lows will dip into the upper 40s for much of central and eastern Kansas, with some areas west of Hutchinson flirting with mid-40s. Wichita is expected to bottom out near 48 degrees by early Saturday morning.

Residents are advised to prepare for fall-like conditions, especially during the overnight hours. Those heading to Friday night football games or outdoor events may want to bundle up, as temperatures will fall quickly after sunset. Farmers and gardeners should also be aware of the cooler stretch, though no frost is expected this early in the season.

Saturday will bring a quick rebound, with highs reaching the mid-70s under mostly sunny skies. The weekend overall will remain mild, with another cool night Saturday before warmer air returns early next week.
