Kansas drivers are waking up to glowing headlights disappearing into gray walls of fog. Visibility has dropped sharply across parts of central and south-central Kansas, creating hazardous conditions during peak morning travel.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until noon CST. Visibility may fall to one-quarter mile or less, especially north of Highway 54 and along Highway 56. The fog is widespread and slow to lift, lingering longer than typical early-winter events.
This morning’s commute carries the highest risk. Low visibility can make intersections hard to spot and vehicles appear suddenly. Emergency officials urge drivers to slow down, increase following distance, and use low-beam headlights. Sudden braking remains a concern on rural highways and ramps.
Conditions gradually improve by midday as fog thins from south to north. Skies turn brighter this afternoon, and temperatures climb into the mid-60s, easing travel later today. Still, patchy fog may redevelop after sunset and into the early overnight hours.
Christmas Day brings a different feel. Patchy fog may linger early, but sunshine returns quickly. Temperatures surge toward the upper 60s, making for unusually warm December travel conditions. Roads should remain dry and clear.
Looking ahead to post-Christmas travel on Saturday, the pattern favors smooth driving. Highs near 69 degrees and partly sunny skies dominate. Nights cool into the mid-30s, but no precipitation or winter hazards are expected for Wichita.
While winter storms affect other regions nationwide, Kansas remains focused on visibility, not snow or ice. Still, this time of year brings sudden changes, especially during early mornings.
Travel tips:
Slow down in fog. Avoid high beams. Allow extra time before noon.
