Wichita, Kansas – A wave of afternoon thunderstorms and sweltering heat will grip Kansas this week, with isolated storms possible as early as Monday and highs pushing into the upper 90s through Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, southeast Kansas will be the first to see storm development, mainly during late afternoon hours through Tuesday. By midweek, showers and storms are expected to become more widespread across the state, particularly Wednesday and Thursday, bringing potential lightning, brief downpours, and gusty winds.

Cities including Coffeyville, Independence, and Parsons should prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions each afternoon. Wednesday looks to bring the broadest storm coverage, with highs between 93°F and 99°F across much of central and southern Kansas. Wichita, Salina, and Hutchinson could also see scattered showers during peak heating hours.

With heat indices nearing triple digits and storm potential increasing, Kansans are urged to stay weather-aware, limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, and ensure mobile alerts are enabled. Residents should charge devices and secure loose outdoor items ahead of potential gusts.

Rain chances taper slightly by Friday, but storms could still develop with highs remaining in the mid-90s. More updates are expected as the week progresses.
