Wichita, Kansas – Thunderstorms are expected to develop across central Kansas tonight, bringing the risk of wind gusts up to 60 mph and heavy rainfall that could impact roads and utilities from Salina to Wichita.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, the best chances for storms will arrive after sunset Wednesday, especially in cities like Salina (57% chance), Russell (55%), Hutchinson (49%), and Pratt (51%). Storms could reach Wichita later this evening with a 34% likelihood, while Topeka and surrounding areas face a 43% chance of strong storms. The most severe weather is likely to concentrate along and east of Interstate 135.
Localized flooding may develop along low-lying roads and in urban areas. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and prepare for possible power outages due to high winds. The strongest storms could produce brief but dangerous downpours, especially on U.S. 81, U.S. 400, and other major highways through central Kansas.
Those in Harper, Winfield, and Emporia should also stay weather aware through the early hours Thursday, as scattered storms persist. While storm chances drop for Coffeyville and Chanute, all Kansans are advised to monitor updates and avoid non-essential travel during periods of heavy rain or wind.
Storm warnings may be extended or upgraded as new information arrives. Stay tuned to the National Weather Service for the latest alerts.
