Wichita, KS — A winter storm is bringing heavy snow and dangerously cold temperatures across Kansas through midweek, creating hazardous travel conditions and extreme wind chills. Wichita and surrounding areas face up to 8 inches of snow by early Wednesday, with wind chills dropping as low as -20°F through Thursday, making frostbite a serious risk within 30 minutes of exposure.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday for Central, South Central, and Southeast Kansas. Snowfall of 4 to 8 inches is expected, with gusty northeast winds up to 35 mph creating blowing snow and near-zero visibility along major roadways, including I-35. An Extreme Cold Warning is in place until noon Thursday, with wind chills as low as -25°F possible.
Residents are advised to avoid travel if possible. If necessary, carry an emergency kit with a flashlight, food, and water. Layer clothing, including a hat, face mask, and gloves, to protect against frostbite.
