Wichita, Kan. – Scattered showers and thunderstorms could dampen Labor Day plans across central and eastern Kansas, with the highest chances for storms Monday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, storm coverage will be uneven, but areas from Topeka to Emporia and Coffeyville hold a 50% or greater chance of rain through Monday evening. Wichita faces about a 40% chance of storms, while western counties such as Russell and Pratt will likely remain drier.

Drivers should use caution on highways including I-35 and U.S. 54, where downpours and lightning may create slick travel conditions. Outdoor gatherings, barbecues, and fireworks displays could see interruptions, especially in eastern counties.

By Tuesday, skies will clear and drier air settles in across the state. Highs will remain seasonably cool in the mid to upper 70s before rebounding to the low and mid-80s by Wednesday. Sunshine is expected to dominate much of the week ahead.

Residents are encouraged to stay weather-aware through Labor Day, as additional alerts may be issued if stronger storms develop.
