Chicago, IL – As winter sets in, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is urging residents to stay ahead of respiratory viruses by getting vaccinated. Flu, COVID-19, and RSV vaccines are widely available, and officials emphasize the importance of protection before holiday gatherings.
According to IDPH, Illinois recorded 1,900 pertussis (whooping cough) cases this year, the most since 2012. October alone saw 408 cases, doubling last year’s numbers.
New vaccines for flu and COVID-19 are recommended for everyone over six months. RSV vaccines are available for seniors over 75 and late-term pregnant individuals to protect newborns.
IDPH reminds residents to stay home if sick and wear masks when symptoms arise. Free COVID-19 tests are available at covidtests.gov, and local clinics offer vaccines for uninsured adults and children.
Protect your health this winter by visiting www.vaccines.gov or your local pharmacy.
