Las Vegas, NV – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for California’s Eastern Sierra Slopes through 5 a.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas.
Heavy snow and strong winds are expected across elevations from 7,000 to over 9,000 feet, including areas near Aspendell and Whitney Portal. Forecasters report 8 to 16 inches of snow at mid-elevations and up to 2 feet above 9,000 feet, with wind gusts reaching 50 mph.
The NWS warns that roads, bridges, and overpasses will likely become slick and hazardous, especially along Highway 168 west of Bishop. Travel may become difficult to impossible overnight as snow and wind intensify.
Officials caution that conditions at Whitney Portal could deteriorate rapidly, posing extreme danger to hikers and campers unprepared for sudden winter conditions. Those traveling or recreating in the high Sierra are urged to delay plans or ensure they have proper gear and emergency supplies.
The Winter Storm Warning will remain in effect until 5 a.m. Wednesday, October 15, as another wave of cold, moist air continues to move through the region.
