Whites City, N.M. – A 3.5 magnitude earthquake was recorded about 30 kilometers northwest of Whites City late Thursday evening, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake struck around 4:02 p.m. MDT at a shallow depth of 7.5 kilometers, giving residents across Eddy County a quick jolt.

According to the USGS, the quake was centered near the Guadalupe Mountains region, close to the Texas border. No damage or injuries have been reported as of Thursday night, but light shaking may have been felt in Carlsbad, Whites City, and parts of southern Lea County.

While earthquakes of this magnitude are generally considered minor, they can still rattle structures and unsettle residents unused to seismic activity in southeastern New Mexico. Emergency officials say residents do not need to take action but should review safety procedures in case of aftershocks.

The USGS continues to monitor the area for any additional seismic activity in the coming days. No aftershocks have been detected as of Thursday evening.

Warnings remain in effect for residents to report any damage or shaking to the USGS “Did You Feel It?” portal.
