Whites City, N.M. – A light earthquake struck southern New Mexico early Sunday, shaking parts of Eddy County just after dawn. The U.S. Geological Survey reports the magnitude 3.4 quake hit around 4:40 a.m. local time, centered roughly 57 kilometers south of Whites City at a shallow depth of 6.8 kilometers.
According to the USGS, the tremor occurred near the Texas border, with mild shaking possibly felt in Carlsbad, Whites City, and parts of far West Texas, including near the Guadalupe Mountains. No damage or injuries have been reported as of Sunday morning, and local emergency services say no immediate response was required.
Residents who felt the quake are encouraged to submit reports through the USGS “Did You Feel It?” system to help scientists refine intensity data. Minor quakes of this size are not uncommon in the region, which lies near small fault zones along the Delaware Basin.
Officials say no aftershocks have been recorded, though the area may experience minor seismic adjustments through the day.
