Springfield, IL – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for much of central and west-central Illinois until 6 a.m. Sunday, with the National Weather Service warning of heavy snow, whiteout conditions, and dangerous travel overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, an additional 1 to 3 inches of snow is expected across counties including Knox, Peoria, McLean, Sangamon, Tazewell, Macon, and Fulton, with wind gusts reaching up to 35 mph. The powerful gusts and falling snow are expected to reduce visibility to near zero at times, creating life-threatening travel conditions.
Forecasters caution that roads, bridges, and overpasses will become extremely slick and hazardous through the night. Power outages are also possible as snow-laden tree limbs may fall onto power lines.
Officials urge residents to delay all travel if possible. Those who must drive are advised to keep a winter emergency kit on hand — including blankets, food, water, a flashlight, and jumper cables — in case they become stranded.
