Springfield, IL – A significant winter storm is set to impact central Illinois beginning at midnight Saturday, with heavy snowfall, strong winds, and freezing precipitation expected to create hazardous conditions through noon Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for much of the region, including cities such as Springfield, Champaign, Decatur, and Effingham. Snow accumulations are predicted to exceed 5 inches across the area, with totals of 8 to 12 inches likely along and south of a line stretching from Beardstown to Paris. Areas south of Interstate 70 may also experience sleet and light freezing rain, resulting in ice accumulation up to 0.2 inches.
Travel conditions will likely become treacherous, particularly during the Monday morning commute. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for potential power outages due to the storm’s intensity. Those who must travel should carry an emergency kit with essentials such as a flashlight, food, and water.
The storm is expected to peak Sunday afternoon, with visibility reduced to near-zero in areas experiencing whiteout conditions. For updates on road conditions, visit Getting Around Illinois.
