Burlington, VT – Roads across Eastern Windsor County could turn snow-covered and slick by late Friday morning as heavy, wet snow moves in ahead of the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 10 a.m. Friday until 10 a.m. Saturday for Eastern Windsor County, including White River Junction and Springfield. Total snow accumulations between 6 and 9 inches are expected, with snowfall rates likely exceeding 1 inch per hour Friday evening.

The snow will begin as a wetter, heavier variety late Friday morning, quickly coating Route 5, Interstate 89 near White River Junction and secondary roads throughout the Connecticut River Valley. Travel conditions will deteriorate rapidly between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m., creating difficult driving during peak commute hours. The weight of the snow on trees and power lines could also lead to isolated power outages.

Local road crews will treat primary highways, but snow-packed conditions are likely on untreated roads. Drivers should delay non-essential travel Friday evening, carry emergency supplies and check updated road conditions on NewEngland511 before departing.

Snow becomes lighter and drier overnight into Saturday morning, but slick spots may linger beyond sunrise. Warnings remain in effect until 10 a.m. Saturday.
