FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Thunderstorms could bring brief heavy rain, gusty winds, and lightning across northern Arizona Saturday evening, making travel hazardous on highways and rural roads.

According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, storm chances will remain in place through Sunday with the White Mountains and Mogollon Rim most at risk for downpours and dangerous lightning strikes. By Monday, a push of dry air will limit storm development, offering a quieter stretch for much of the state.

Gusty winds return Tuesday with another round of isolated thunderstorms possible over the White Mountains. By Wednesday, storm activity shifts into eastern Arizona where lightning and bursts of heavy rain could create slick conditions and localized flooding.

Drivers should use caution on wet roads this weekend and be prepared to pull over if visibility drops during storms. Outdoor plans should be adjusted as lightning remains the top threat with these quick-hitting storms.

The National Weather Service says conditions will stay drier through the week, but storm chances could pick up again late Wednesday in far eastern parts of the state.
