Wheaton, IL – Crews working on the Gary Avenue Improvement Project are entering a critical phase this week, prompting a full restriction of pedestrian and bicycle traffic near the active construction zone between Jewell Road and Harrison Avenue.

According to a statement posted Thursday by the City of Wheaton, construction teams are preparing to install large steel supports for the bridge extension near Prairie Avenue. This next stage marks a major milestone in the project, with the steel installation scheduled to begin the week of August 18.

Crews have also completed additional work at both ends of the site. New curbs and fresh pavement were added to the southern end near Harrison Avenue, while paving was completed at the northern section just past Prairie Avenue.

🚧 City officials emphasized that the area is an active construction zone, warning that only authorized personnel are permitted within the work site boundaries. Heavy machinery and ongoing operations pose safety risks, and residents are urged to use alternate routes if walking or biking in the area.

The Gary Avenue Improvement Project continues to make progress on schedule, with city officials encouraging the public to remain cautious and follow all posted detours.
