Wheaton, IL – In response to a growing wave of vehicle thefts targeting Hyundai and Kia models, the Wheaton Police Department has launched a program to provide free steering wheel locks to eligible vehicle owners.

According to the City of Wheaton Government, the initiative is designed for individuals who own or operate 2011–2021 Hyundai or Kia vehicles with turn-to-start key ignition systems, as these models have been increasingly targeted by thieves. To qualify, recipients must either live or work in Wheaton, possess a government-issued ID, and have the vehicle registered in their name.

Residents can obtain the locks by submitting a request through the city’s online Service Request Form at www.wheaton.il.us/ServiceRequest, selecting “Request a Steering Wheel Lock,” or by calling 630-260-2161 to speak with the Traffic Unit.

This proactive step aligns with similar efforts nationwide to curb thefts affecting certain Hyundai and Kia models due to vulnerabilities in their ignition systems.
