Lake County, IN – Drivers on U.S. Route 30 in Lake County, Indiana, have noticed new black stripes appearing along the road. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) reports that these stripes are part of a resurfacing project between State Road 55 and State Road 51.
According to INDOT, the black stripes are created using a product called Void Reducing Asphalt Membrane (VRAM). This innovative material is applied along the intermediate asphalt layer in locations where surface asphalt joints will be placed. When the surface layer is paved and compacted, the VRAM is reheated and squeezes up into the joint to fill any voids. Once the VRAM cools down to under 250°F, it rehardens, forming a seal in the asphalt joint.
INDOT typically uses joint adhesive to bond and seal joints in the surface, but the use of VRAM eliminates this need, offering a more durable solution. VRAM’s primary function is to protect asphalt joints by migrating upwards once the surface asphalt is laid, filling air voids that could entrap air and water.
This technique aims to enhance the longevity and durability of the road, reducing maintenance needs and improving driving conditions. Drivers can expect improved road performance once the project is completed.
