Fall back

Chicago, IL – Many Midwesterners might find themselves with an extra hour of sleep this morning as daylight saving time officially ended at 2 a.m. Sunday, marking the annual “fall back” transition. At that moment, clocks were set back one hour, shifting sunrise and sunset times earlier and giving the illusion of a longer morning.

The time change means that, as of today, sunrise will arrive sooner, which could make morning commutes brighter. However, evening darkness will also set in earlier, a signal that winter is on its way. This seasonal adjustment, which takes place across most of the United States, is meant to maximize daylight hours during the shorter days of late fall and winter.

For those already looking ahead, daylight saving time will return next spring. Clocks will “spring forward” an hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 9th 2025, which will lengthen evening daylight once more. The cycle of “fall back” and “spring forward” is observed in most U.S. states, although some are considering bills to keep daylight saving time year-round.
