Westgard Pass, California – Travel along Highway 168 through the White Mountains could become impassable by Monday evening as heavy snow and strong wind hammer Inyo County into midweek.

According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from late Sunday night through Wednesday evening for the White and Inyo Mountains. Snow totals may exceed 2 feet above 8,000 feet, with 1 to 2 feet above 7,000 feet and 8 to 14 inches down to 6,000 feet. Wind gusts up to 50 mph could produce blowing snow and reduced visibility.

The most hazardous conditions are expected along Highway 168, especially through Westgard Pass, where steep grades and drifting snow may force closures. The heaviest snowfall rates are likely Monday evening through Tuesday afternoon, when rapid accumulation could strand vehicles and weigh down tree limbs. Gusty wind may snap branches and create isolated power issues in higher elevations.

Officials urge residents and visitors to delay all non-essential travel. Anyone who must travel should carry tire chains, extra food, water and winter survival gear.

The watch remains in effect through Wednesday evening, and additional advisories or warnings may follow as confidence increases.
