Grand Rapids, MI — A line of severe storms is expected to bring potentially dangerous conditions to West Michigan through late Sunday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, the highest threat window for severe weather is between 2 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Sunday, March 30. Forecast models indicate damaging winds, large hail, and the possibility of brief tornadoes across central and western Michigan, including Kent County and surrounding areas.

Authorities urge residents to secure outdoor items, remain indoors during the storm, and avoid flooded roads. The Kent County Sheriff’s Office emphasized caution around downed power lines and malfunctioning traffic signals, which should be treated as four-way stops. Emergency dispatchers are bracing for increased calls related to storm-related hazards.

“Call 911 for life-threatening emergencies only,” the sheriff’s office posted. For non-life-threatening concerns such as downed trees or traffic signal outages, residents can call (616) 336-3113.

Local officials recommend checking on neighbors and preparing emergency kits in case of power outages. The current weather system is classified as an enhanced risk for severe weather, a level 3 of 5 on the Storm Prediction Center’s scale, marking a higher-than-usual chance for dangerous storm activity in the region.
