Riverton, Wyoming – Scattered thunderstorms and rising fire danger will keep much of Wyoming on high alert Tuesday, especially across the Bighorn Basin and southern counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Riverton, storms may intensify after 3 p.m. Tuesday across Johnson and Bighorn Counties, bringing strong outflow winds and large hail. Travel on U.S. 20 and WY-789 could be hazardous during afternoon commutes. Residents are urged to secure loose objects and avoid outdoor activity during storms.
Southern Wyoming, including Sweetwater, Lincoln, and Rock Springs, faces a growing risk of wildfire. Elevated to critical fire weather conditions are expected to return Friday and Saturday, fueled by gusty winds and dry air.
Casper, Lander, and Riverton will see daytime highs in the upper 80s through midweek, with lighter winds Wednesday offering brief relief. Juneteenth (Thursday) remains sunny and breezy, with temperatures near 96°F in Riverton — a reminder to stay hydrated and limit afternoon outdoor activity.
Fire risk intensifies heading into the weekend, particularly for campers and those using grills or fire pits. Wind gusts over 25 mph are possible Friday into Saturday.
More thunderstorms may return early next week, but confidence remains low. NWS encourages weather spotters to report severe activity and fire outbreaks.
Warnings remain in effect across southern Wyoming into Saturday.
