LA CROSSE, Wis. – A widespread hard freeze is expected across much of western and central Wisconsin Thursday night into Friday morning, bringing the most significant cold snap of the fall season so far. Lows are forecast to tumble into the upper 20s and low 30s, likely ending the growing season across large portions of the region.

According to the National Weather Service La Crosse office, temperatures will drop below freezing in most counties north and east of the Mississippi River, including La Crosse, Richland Center, Black River Falls, and Wisconsin Rapids, where the probability of reaching 32°F or colder exceeds 90%. Sensitive vegetation could be severely damaged if not protected. Gardeners and farmers are urged to cover plants and disconnect outdoor hoses ahead of the freeze.

The NWS also notes that frost formation is possible both Wednesday and Thursday nights, but the more widespread and damaging freeze is expected late Thursday into early Friday. Residents should prepare for icy windshields and cold morning commutes.

High pressure building behind the system will bring sunny but chilly days through the weekend, with gradual moderation by Sunday. Until then, clear skies and calm winds will support strong overnight cooling.
