La Crosse, Wisconsin – Drivers across central and western Wisconsin could encounter dangerous road conditions tonight as drizzle spreads north into areas where temperatures are below freezing, creating a growing risk of ice on roadways.

According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, light rain and drizzle developing this afternoon will move into colder air this evening, leading to freezing rain and slick conditions, especially along and north of Interstate 94. Roads that appear wet at first may quickly turn icy, with the highest risk lasting through early Friday morning.

Ice accumulations are expected to remain light but impactful, generally up to a tenth of an inch in the most affected areas. The greatest concern stretches from northeast Iowa through western and central Wisconsin, including areas near Black River Falls, Neillsville, Medford, and Wausau. Even small amounts of ice could lead to slide-offs, especially on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses.

The risk for icy travel decreases farther southwest toward the Mississippi River, where temperatures are expected to stay warmer. However, conditions may change quickly overnight as temperatures fluctuate near freezing.

Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and be alert for sudden icy patches, particularly late tonight and during the early Friday commute. Residents should monitor updates closely, as small changes in temperature could significantly affect how widespread and severe icing becomes.
