BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The first significant snow of the season will blanket the North Cascades late this weekend, with travel expected to turn treacherous for those heading toward Mount Baker and nearby passes. Up to 9 inches of snow could fall above 5,000 feet between early Sunday and early Monday, marking an early return to winter conditions across Whatcom and Skagit Counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Seattle, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 5 a.m. Sunday through 5 a.m. Monday, covering the higher elevations of the Cascades, including Mount Baker. Forecasters warn that snow-packed and slick conditions will develop on mountain routes, especially along State Route 542 (Mount Baker Highway). Visibility may also drop sharply during heavier snow bursts.

The NWS cautions that this will be the first measurable snow event of the season, catching some backcountry travelers off guard. Drivers are urged to check WSDOT cameras and mountain pass reports before heading out, carry emergency kits, and delay non-essential travel if possible. Those venturing into alpine trails should prepare for winter hiking conditions and rapidly dropping temperatures.

Power disruptions are possible in exposed ridge communities, and early-season snow could add stress to trees and power lines. Residents are advised to charge devices and keep extra blankets and flashlights on hand as colder weather settles in across the region.
