HOT SPRINGS, Va. – A Freeze Watch is in effect for the Allegheny Highlands and Greenbrier Valley late Thursday night through Friday morning, with temperatures expected to fall to around 29°F between 2AM and 9AM EDT Friday. The National Weather Service said this next push of cold air could end the growing season across high valleys in Virginia and West Virginia.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, the Freeze Watch includes Bath County, Virginia, and Eastern and Western Greenbrier Counties, West Virginia, including towns such as Hot Springs, Lewisburg, Rainelle, and White Sulphur Springs. A Frost Advisory remains in effect until 9AM Thursday as readings hover in the low 30s before rebounding briefly this afternoon.
Residents should protect sensitive vegetation and plumbing ahead of the colder overnight stretch. Gardeners are urged to cover or move plants indoors, and homeowners should drain hoses and wrap exposed pipes. Agricultural experts note that subfreezing conditions of this duration typically mark the end of the growing season in the Allegheny Highlands.
Drivers should allow extra time Friday morning for frost removal and icy bridge conditions. Sunshine will return later in the day with highs in the upper 40s to low 50s. A gradual warming trend is expected to begin over the weekend.
