Blacksburg, Virginia – Scattered showers and isolated storms are set to return to southwest Virginia starting Sunday afternoon, with the highest impacts targeting Boone, Wilkesboro, and the Blue Ridge foothills. Storm chances surge again by midweek as a stronger cold front approaches the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a brief uptick in precipitation is expected late Sunday, especially in Boone (60%) and Wilkesboro (55%). After a lull on Monday and Tuesday, rain chances climb sharply across the region by Wednesday and peak Thursday in cities like Lewisburg (60%), Mount Airy (55%), and Roanoke (50%).
Localized rainfall could impact outdoor plans and travel, especially on rural mountain roads and along stretches of I-81 near Blacksburg and Wytheville. Commuters in Lexington and Lynchburg should watch for slick conditions by Wednesday morning.
Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, check gutters, and prepare for possible downpours during the Thursday commute. Lightning and gusty winds may accompany the stronger storms.
This pattern is expected to continue through Thursday night, with additional advisories possible if storm coverage increases.
