Marquette, Michigan – Roads across western Upper Michigan could turn icy by the evening commute as snow and freezing precipitation spread into the region starting at 7 p.m. EST Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 7 p.m. EST Tuesday until 7 p.m. EST Wednesday for Ontonagon, Gogebic, Iron, Dickinson, Menominee and southern Houghton counties. Forecasters expect 2 to 4 inches of snow, with locally up to 5 inches north of U.S. 2 in Ontonagon County. Ice accumulations around one-tenth of an inch are possible, especially in areas that see more freezing rain.
Wind gusts up to 35 mph could lead to reduced visibility in heavier bursts and create slick stretches on exposed roadways, including U.S. 2 and M-28. Communities from Ironwood and Iron River to Iron Mountain and Menominee should prepare for slippery conditions during both the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes.
Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance and check for changing road conditions before heading out. Conditions should gradually improve Wednesday evening, but additional advisories may be issued if icing becomes more widespread.
