Amarillo, Texas – Thunderstorms moving across the Texas Panhandle could produce dangerous rainfall rates this afternoon, raising the risk for localized flash flooding from 3 p.m. Monday through the overnight hours into Tuesday. Drivers across Amarillo, Pampa, Borger, and surrounding communities may encounter ponding on roadways and rapidly changing travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, showers and storms will redevelop late today with rainfall intensities reaching 1 to 2 inches per hour. Though the probability of flooding remains low—estimated between 5 and 14 percent—slow-moving storms or repeated rounds of rain could overwhelm drainage in some neighborhoods, especially after dark.

Primary hazards include heavy downpours, flash flooding in low-lying or poorly drained areas, and the potential for overnight flooding along rural highways. Lightning and gusty winds are also possible, making conditions hazardous for evening travel. Emergency managers urge residents to avoid flooded roads and to remember: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”

Storm chances will taper Tuesday night with a drying trend expected to begin Wednesday. Conditions should improve by Thursday and Friday, when a quieter weather pattern returns.
