Rapid City, SD – Residents across western South Dakota are facing hazardous wind conditions today as a High Wind Warning takes effect through 9 p.m. MDT Monday, according to the National Weather Service in Rapid City.
Forecasters say northwest winds of 30 to 45 mph, with gusts reaching up to 60 mph, are expected throughout the day across Harding, Perkins, Butte, Meade, and Ziebach counties — including portions of the Cheyenne River Reservation.
According to the NWS, the strongest winds will occur from midmorning through late evening, making travel hazardous for high-profile vehicles along Highways 85, 212, and 34. Flying debris, downed tree limbs, and potential power outages are possible as gusts intensify this afternoon.
Officials advise residents to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel in open areas, and watch for reduced visibility from blowing dust.
The NWS urges anyone traveling through the northern and western plains to use caution and stay alert to changing conditions as the wind event continues through tonight.
