Rapid City, S.D. – Severe thunderstorms could sweep across western South Dakota through 9 p.m. Sunday, bringing the risk of large hail, damaging winds, and lightning from the Black Hills to the Badlands.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for eight counties: Bennett, Custer, Fall River, Jackson, Lawrence, Meade, Oglala Lakota, and Pennington. Storms are expected to intensify by late afternoon, with strong cells likely along U.S. Highway 385 and Interstate 90 near Rapid City and Sturgis.

Residents in Hot Springs, Wall, and Pine Ridge should prepare for sudden downpours and wind gusts over 60 mph. Power outages and minor tree damage are possible. Those outdoors—especially campers and hikers in the Black Hills—are urged to seek shelter well before storms arrive. Avoid using metal objects and stay indoors during lightning.

This is the first widespread severe weather event to impact this region in late June. With summer tourism underway, officials advise checking weather alerts before traveling or planning evening outdoor events.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch 479 remains in effect until 9 p.m. MDT. More warnings may be issued if conditions worsen.
